Italian Edition Steppa
The Steppe is the story of a long journey undertaken by the young Egòruska, who has been sent by his mother to study in the city. The journey is made partly in a carriage, together with his uncle and an elderly priest, and partly on a convoy of wagons laden with wool bales, in the company of a heterogeneous group of peasant-merchants.
The slow procession through the vast Ukrainian steppe, seemingly monotonous and unchanging, is in reality teeming with visual and auditory stimuli that the young boy learns to know, love, and fear. Amidst the hastily assembled camps to escape the scorching heat of the day, the frugal meals around the fire, the seemingly endless storms, the fantastical tales, and the stories of a past too long lamented, Egòruska, increasingly distant from the comforting environment in which he has always lived, learns to know the world and himself, becoming aware, for the first time, of the weight of loneliness and the uncertainty of a future to which, against his will, he finds himself destined.
Anton Chekhov (1860 - 1904), the Russian writer and playwright, is the author of several short stories, including The Death of a Clerk (1883), The Privy Councillor (1886), and The Rothschild's Violin (1894), as well as numerous dramatic works, such as The Seagull (1896), Uncle Vanya (1899), and The Cherry Orchard (1904).
